Glass Fusion – an Introduction (£360 + materials) Shirley Eccles
REF – 192.1485
This workshop will give you an introduction to glass fusing and slumping techniques and you will aspire to complete four projects during your visit to Denman. You will learn about different glass materials and how they react once fired and you will have the opportunity to explore different colours, textures and techniques in glass.
Project 1: Microwave Glass Fusing. For this project you will be using a microwave to melt glass and you will be able to observe how glass reacts when heated. The small finished glass pieces are suitable for jewellery, keyrings and fridge magnets. This project is a wonderful opportunity to test and experiment with different materials and colours.
Project 2: Decorative Tile. For this project you will extend your use of different glass materials and colours (transparent and opaque) to create an interesting design for a tile, coaster, small wall/window hanging or wind chime. You will be guided in your use of different glass tools and how to melt glass stringers over a candle flame.
Project 3: Slumped Bowl. You will have the opportunity to create your own sheet of art glass that will undergo two firings, first fusing and then slump firing it into a mould of your choice to make your own beautiful, unique bowl. The bowl will be functional and is suitable as a decorative centre piece or to serve treats or salads.
Project 4: Learn the technique of kiln carving and how to create texture in glass. For this project we will work with extra thick clear glass and you will have a choice of projects to select from. Either a cheese board, wall plaque, four coasters or a platter.
Cost for all four Projects is £55 or £65 (depending on the size of the platters) and this price includes all firings. Findings for jewellery, keyrings and magnets are optional extras; these along with silver chains, can be purchased from the tutor.
