No Way Home – a memoir in the making
My book is called ‘No Way Home’ -a biography/memoir which tells the story of my German mum and her sister in the aftermath of WW2 in Germany.I translated their diaries from 1945 in which they tell of their 12 month separation and the journeys they made to find one another.
This is not a political/military story- my mum and aunt were just young women in their late teens- rather a personal account and social commentary of an important time in 20th century history.
My talk covers aspects of geographical/historical context, their family life before the war in 1939, how I came to write ‘No Way Home’ and the research I did whilst writing it.
My presentation includes family video footage from 1939, some poems I wrote, inspired by what I was discovering and excerpts from the book as well as some photographs. The talk lasts for 45 mins approximately and I offer the opportunity to ask questions
