Muck, Grime, & Sweat

Muck, Grime, & Sweat is the first installment of a firefighter’s tale, as Darran Gough first steps into the uniform which will play a starring role in his life for the next 40 years.

Darran Gough was a child of the swinging ’60s, born into a lock keeper’s family. His childhood was idyllic, growing up at Shiplake Lock on the River Thames — he often boasts that he had a boat before he had a bicycle. However, a tragedy at the lock involving his father, Peter Gough, in 1982 would have a profound impact on his life and future career.

What began as an innocent “I can do that” transformed into a lifelong career within the fire service.

Darran Gough’s destiny was to be needed, but to be needed, someone had to face an unthinkable emergency. Whether in the direct heat of the action or coordinating from the control room, when a person made that dreaded call to 999, the adrenaline set in, and Darran flew into action. His unique experience spans all aspects of the fire service — from starting as a retained fireman in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, stepping behind the fire with Oxfordshire’s control team while remaining on call at Banbury’s busy two-pump station, to later transferring to full-time firefighting in the West Midlands. Darran’s comprehensive, 360-degree view of the fire service weaves together the lessons learned both on and off duty.
